Remember DNA from science class – or maybe you need a refresher? Here’s an official definition:
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and some viruses. The main role of DNA molecules is the long-term storage of information. (from Wikipedia)
. . . .long term storage of information – ya’ mean like a bookcase?
Standing 5’5” tall and at 1’7” wide, these units (called MYDNA) by designer Joe Escalona are just plain cool. By creating a storage unit to symbolically represent the building blocks of all living beings, Escalona has crossed into something like metaphysical design.
What he’s saying here is that the books, music, and other information that a person stores on bookcases are the signifiers of personal identity.
And how can you argue that notion? You can tell a lot about a person based on their reading habits, what kind of music they listen to, and photos of friends and family. These are external representations of what an individual holds inside. And the DNA helix design represents this.
MYDNA is available in several colors and in static form or as a rotating unit.
Currently MYDNA is only available in limited edition or via custom orders from the Joe Escalona Studio.
