Will LG Suck in the Vacuum Market?1

They make a good TV, but can LG clean up in the vacuum market? The company recently announced plans to release two vacuums in the United States: the LG LuV200 and LuV300.

Both units are the first vacuums ever designed by the company. They haven’t done too shabby with home entertainment, cell phones, washers, dryers, refrigerators, and countless other appliances, so this seems like a no-brainer. Still, after 102 years of Hoover and the mega-power of newbies like Dyson, we have to wonder if LG has what it takes to suck (or not suck) in the vacuum business.

The company says they will pack both units with DualForce suction, which adds two air pathways for a wider suction area. They also boast a new Kompressor technology, which can squish down more of the funk, while also allowing for easier disposal. Too bad neither perk makes vacuuming more interesting.

One thing that could be kind of fun is the Click ‘N Go wand. Instead of wishing for a fairy godmother to do your chores, all you need is the wand – the kind with radio-frequency that allows lazy cleaners to control the unit remotely. It’s designed for stairs, upholstery, and other hard-to-reach areas. We just like the sloth factor.

The LuV200R has a 30-foot auto-rewind cord and a wild cherry chassis. It is expected to run $299. If you want to up the reach, the LuV300B has a cord that stretches to 40 feet. It also has the seal of approval from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), which along with a Riviera Blue color scheme will run you an extra $100.

Expect both units to start sucking sometime in the second quarter of 2010.
