True Value Declares ‘Design SOS’0

A lot of people love wood paneling, shag carpeting and beaded drapes; it doesn’t mean they should actually own those things.

If you know someone who can’t seem to part with their crappy decor, you could play with matches in their living room, drop by with that brand-new bulldozer, or enter them into True Value’s “Design SOS: Friends to the Rescue” contest.

From now through October 7, out-of-date DIYers are invited to submit stories, photos and videos to True Value’s contest website. You can enter yourself or a friend. Think of it as an intervention, with a prize at the end.

“We see quite a few design dilemmas across our community of home-improvement bloggers and sometimes even within our own friends’ homes,” said Aaron Olson, co-founder of the blog network. “We’re thrilled to partner with True Value to promote this contest and help DIYers, and their friends, turn their home improvement mess into a success.”

Starting October 22, the appalled viewing public will be asked to vote for the most disastrous design from 10 finalists. The winner, who will be announced in November, will score $2,500 at their local True Value and an in-person consultation with a knowledgeable True Value “Master of All Things Hardwarian.” If that friend is still a friend, the two of you can shop together, since the ones doing the nominating will be rewarded with the same shopping spree.

So remember: Friends shouldn’t let friends live with disastrous design — especially if they can score a prize out of it!
