Tie One On – Cables1

Those cable ties that are most commonly used by electricians are also handy gadgets with multiple uses around the house and yard.  We’ve used them to temporarily secure kitchen cabinet doors when impromptu guests drop by with little ones.

Cabinets, Backsplash & Countertops0

A kitchen is the heart of a home, so undertaking a total renovation of this space requires flexibility and perseverance on everyone’s part. Washing dishes in the bathtub, living with the refrigerator in the hallway, preparing meals and cooking in the entry way all start off as a fun adventure, but when two months stretch to three and more, the novelty is often replaced with frustration and sqabbling.

Kitchen Gadgets on the Cheap0

I like kitchen gadgets as much as the next gal, or guy, but there’s a limit. Convenience, utility and cost are the three foremost considerations for what makes it into my kitchen.

When you come right down to it, I have my half dozen tried and true favorite utensils that I use regularly. They’re the practical, inexpensive workhorses in my kitchen. But I’m amazed at how much a person can spend on kitchen tools when a perfectly good solution is available at a fraction of the cost.

For example, here’s a gorgeous stainless steel meat pounder for $34.99 . . .

Internet Tools: How To Build a Greenhouse0

http://www.flickr.com/photos/marilynjane/3607721097/sizes/z/in/photostream/

I love gardening—even though my thumb is more gray than green.  As I cook quite a bit, I tend to grow plants that I can eat, such as basil, rosemary, cilantro, and green onion.*  I’ve tried tomatoes . . .no luck there.

I’m looking to expand the size of my little garden—and a greenhouse would be ideal for my purposes.  But how big do I want it to be?  What materials do I use?  Should it be a portable or a permanent structure?

With just a few more days to enter HGTV’s Dream Home Sweepstakes, I finally took the opportunity to watch the online video tour.

Wow!  The house is huge, with around 3,000 square feet of living space, plus something they call a “car barn,” which is a massive garage with a loft that could be built into even more living space.

How To Unclog a Kitchen Sink1

Nothing says I love you to the wife better than some good old fashioned housework.  (Porn for Women)

But, there’s nothing like doing the dishes, and the water stops going down the drain, and you’re stuck with a sinkful of stanky dishwater.  Just think what a hero you’ll be if you can do the dishes and fix the drain!  >> READ MORE

Vintage Kitchen Appliances0

I can be picky about my kitchen appliances.  For example, I despise glass top stoves.  I like that they come up to temp rapidly, but they are a royal pain to clean if something boils over.  Sure, I know there are new cleaning agents out there that make it a lot easier than it used to be to scrape burnt gravy off of a glass burner—but call me a purist.  I’m an old-fashioned gas stove kind’a guy.

Take this stove from Elmira  for example:

Tool Tip: Moisture Meter0

In the DIYer’s world, moisture is the enemy. Whether it’s spewing from a clogged drainpipe, dripping from the ceiling, or seeping through a basement foundation, water is to be contained, managed, and eliminated. A decent moisture meter is one of the early lines of defense- giving you a heads up to a percolating moisture problem before it’s too late.
